|BoatUS Foundation Announces Life Jacket Awards|
|Tuesday, 29 March 2011 09:00|
The first place award of $5,000 went to Float-Tech, for their new See-Tee. This is a shirt with a built-in inflatable bladder. It feels and looks more or less like a regular shirt, but provides buoyancy in case of an emergency. It should be pointed out, however, that the See-Tee is not a full-blown USCG approved life jacket, but is a buoyancy aid.
Second place (with a $1,000 pay-out) went to the Director’s Bureau, a creative consulting company. Their newly designed float coat is a windbreaker with microspheres, hollow spherical particles, which help provide floatation.
The $500 third place award was taken by a design team of high school seniors from St. Thomas More High School, in Milwakee, WI. Their design combines traditional foam floatation with a modern inflatable life jacket. They call it the Aqua Buoy – and we’re pretty darn sure these kids will be getting an “A”.
You can check out the designs and get more info on the contest at www.boatus.com/foundation/winners. And if you have any radical ideas, keep them under wraps; the 2012 contest is just around the corner.
